Produce FAQ

Where does the produce come from?

The produce is purchased at a large produce warehouse in South Phoenix.

What other places buy from this warehouse?

This warehouse sells to many grocery stores and restaurants in the valley, including Sprouts, miscellaneous farmers markets, and many valley restaurants.

Do we know what we'll get ahead of time?

No. Produce is an interesting thing because the prices, quality and availability are constantly changing.  We do not know what will be available in good quality at a fair price each given week until we get to the warehouse.  We always try to make the basket half fruit and half vegetables, and at least a $35 savings off of grocery store prices.

What is the best way to make sure the basket is used?

  • When you get the basket home on Saturday read through storage information on the website for anything you have questions about.  You may even learn new things about produce you thought you were storing correctly!
  • Assess each type of produce as you put it away to determine shelf life.
  • Plan out side dishes with your vegetables.
  • Cut fruit like watermelon and store in the refrigerator.
  • Start substituting fruit for less wholesome snacks for your family!

How much of each item will come in the basket?

We try to include enough of each item that you will be able to make a side dish for a family of four.  Our families (one totally vegetarian) are able to use the basket for all our produce needs and rarely have to buy produce from the store in between co-ops.

What if I have a larger family?

If you have more than four children, order two baskets.  Try one first to make sure this works for your family, and if it does - contribute for two baskets next time!

I am concerned about getting fruits and vegetables that I know nothing about.  Is the produce something that I'll actually use?

Yes.  Each week we tend to purchase staples such as apples, bananas, lettuce, and tomato.  Based on availability and price, we then add other offerings such as squash, greens, melons, berries and garlic.  Occasionally, we will add something out of the ordinary that is a rare treat.  We've even had coconut and lychee!
